Shake of the Day Rules
By Chip Bush
SHAKE OF THE DAY:
This is not so much a game but more like a small wager with a chance to win something from the bar. Not every bar has a shake of the day and rules vary widely from establishment to establishment but the basic structure is this: For a predetermined price, sometimes a quarter, sometimes a dollar, (sometimes a dollar will get you more than one roll,) you get one chance to play, per day. Whatever you roll determines if you win anything, (Usually there are no ‘Wilds’ in Shake of the Day.)
A typical payout might be; 3 of a kind, you get to roll again. 4 of a kind gets you a free shot. A full house might win ¼ of the pot and perhaps a specific 5 of a kind (all 6’s for example) wins the jackpot, which may be all the money in the pot from previous SotD attempts. Rules and payout structure are individually determined by each bar, so it’s always wise to ask what the house rules are before playing.
Strategic Tip: Never complain when you don’t win anything. No one likes a sore loser!
Hopefully, this brief tutorial has helped demystify some of the bizarre rules and rituals surrounding this apparently local phenomenon, and has made it less intimidating for you to jump in or initiate a game the next time you’re out on the town. After all, the more people playing, the better the odds that someone else will be buying your drink for you. But play long enough and eventually your lucky streak WILL come to an end and you’ll be the one picking up the tab. Always remember though, it’s all in the name of a good time going out. And whenever there’s a chance that the bartender will be picking up the round for everyone, that just makes it even better.
Strategic Tips for Life: 1) Always Tip your Bartender, and 2) NEVER Drink and Drive!
