Ship-Captain-Crew & 7-14-21 Dice Rules
By Chip Bush
SHIP-CAPTAIN-CREW:
Play is the same as original bar dice, with each person taking up to three rolls on their turn.
In this variation though, one must roll a six (The Ship), a five (the Captain) and a four (The Crew), in that order. If, on the first roll, there is a five, a four but no six, the roll doesn’t count and all five dice must be picked up and rolled again. Once the Six, five and four are rolled, the remaining two dice are that players score, either as the sum of the spots, or as in Mexican, with the higher of the two as the leading number. If the feat is accomplished in less than three rolls by the first player, they may also elect to stop, and “Set the pace” for the remaining players. Again, the last two players face each other in a best two out of three situation.
Strategic Tip: If you can, stop after one or two shakes. Make the other players work for it. Don’t give them the luxury of All-Day!
7-14-21:
This is perhaps the simplest of the bar dice games. And it can be played with 2 or more people, but in this case, the larger the group, the better. The first player starts with 5 dice, and rolls, counting the number of aces. The tally continues until they produce a roll without an ace, at which point the cup is passed to the next player, and the tally of aces continues from where the previous player left off. However, when the tally reaches 17, each time an ace is rolled, it is removed from the dice cup so that it’s impossible to have a total of more than 21. Additionally, when the tally reaches 20, the final die may be flopped in front of any player, leaving them to pick up the dice cup and reveal the roll. The point of keeping the tally is simple: The person who rolls the 7th ace gets to call the shot, the person who rolls the 14th ace must buy the shot, and the person who rolls, or ends up with the 21st ace, must take the shot. Fair warning: If you roll the 7th ace, feel free to pick the nastiest shot you can think of, but keep in mind that in the end, you may be the one having to take your own medicine!
Strategic Tip: Don’t be the roller of the 14th or 21st Ace.
